In 1989, he went into private practice as a criminal defense lawyer. He was recognized as a leading criminal defense lawyer in 1990 after successfully litigating high profile cases such as the murder case against Dana McIntosh.
Brett was one of the founding attorneys that developed the recovery defense, a noncriminal disposition strategy, for drug and alcohol related offenses. He has in-depth knowledge of the law and the specifics of the various accredited recovery programs. He also has an understanding of the human characteristics of substance abuse and addiction.
